General information about the residency:

The residency unit is a furnished one-bedroom that includes a queen bed, a full bathroom, a kitchenette and a living room. The living room will also be the artist's studio. We can provide an easel and storage table, all other materials should be provided by the artist. This unit is on the basement floor of a house that was built into the hillside creating a very serene and quiet experience. The home upstairs is occupied by the residency manager. Artists will have access to the garden and natural spaces surrounding the house.

About Asheville

Asheville is located in Western North Carolina, between Charlotte and the Tennessee border. Nestled amongst the Blue Ridge Mountains, this city is surrounded by peaks and valleys with natural features such as rivers, waterfalls, and endless hiking trails. Adopting the name “Land of Sky,” there is no lack of inspiring views to sink into. This region has had a long tradition of craftsmanship, attracting artisans practicing pottery, painting, textiles and music. It was home to Black Mountain College (1933-1957), an avant-garde art school which hosted maverick spirits such as William de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Josef Albers and John Cage. Keeping with this creative spirit, this small city draws many healers, free thinkers and spiritualists. With a burgeoning culinary scene that is the best in the state and ample breweries to explore, Asheville is a nourishing and inspiring place to experience.

The weather during the winter residency will be chilly, between 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, our museums and galleries will be open and there will be plenty of music and events to choose from. We also have endless firewood for the fire pit and imagine this will be a peaceful time to settle in and create.

Chanika Svetvilas

Highstown, NJ

“The Hidden Hills artist residency would give me time to focus on a new series of book collage and drawing works using botanical, medical drawings, and medicine in art to focus on stigma, healthcare and wellbeing. I am applying to have time to create that also focuses on my own wellbeing and self-care and how that impacts what I create. I would like to create a series of intimate works that explore this sensibility. I self-identify as having an invisible disability of neurodiversity and explore this lived experience in my work.” - Chanika

DIAMOND GREER JONES

Chicago, IL

“I am applying for this residency because I am finally choosing to listen to my Soul saying “No More Waiting.” I began painting earlier this year and have been a secret artist all of my life. Poetry, Sound, Dance and Curating were my first expressions of art since the age of 6. And yet, this is the first time in my life that I am choosing my creativity over practicality.” - Diamond
